Funding the Future of Transport – One Year On: A Financial Markets Perspective

Charles Bentley, Analyst, Equity Research, Jeffries Equity Research

2021 proved to be a record breaking year for global equity financing, with EV supply chain companies some of the major participants in IPO activity. In the listed corporate space, collaboration continues to increase through the supply chain, as availability considerations become an increasingly important consideration. As 2022 evolves, investor perceptions are likely to remain volatile as technological and execution proof-points are met (or not), and changes in regulatory environments shift expectations around likely adoption paths, and where value is likely to be created through the value chain. Continued inflows into ESG investments continues supports capital raising opportunities across both public and private markets.

Nickel Market Outlook — Complex Demand & Supply Fundamentals

Jason Sappor, Senior Analyst, S&P Global Commodity Insights

Russia's invasion of Ukraine triggered an intense short squeeze in March, pushing the London Metal Exchange three-month nickel price up 251% in just two days. Although the price has since retreated, it remains up 42% since the end of 2021. Will the price stay elevated for the rest of 2022 or come under pressure from expanding Indonesian output? This presentation will assess the nickel market performance through mid-2022 and provide our projections for plug-in electric vehicle sales, nickel demand, supply, and prices.

A Less Carbon-Intensive World through SQM's Brine-Based Lithium

Stefan Debruyne, Director, Business Development, Lithium, SQM International

While the raw materials, which will be needed to help decarbonize our planet, are critical to achieve the objectives set by the Paris Agreement, an important stakeholder interest is that these raw materials should be mined sustainably. Life cycle assessment (LCA) of brine-based lithium is a key tool to reduce footprint going forward. The footprint of Argonne's lithium LCA will be presented both at cathode and cell level, as well as an update on SQM's sustainable development plan and global lithium demand.

09:30

When Will Lithium Supply Diversify?

Martin Jackson, Senior Analyst, Battery Metals, CRU Group

Four years on from the last lithium market bubble, a lack of diversity in supply remains. This leaves the industry exposed to volatility, and putting the energy transition at risk. We will uncover what is changing: extraction technology, resources, producers, pricing arrangements, and political intervention. Advancements that will place lithium miners and refiners in a stronger position to support the widespread adoption of Li-ion batteries.

09:50

Brazilian Nickel's Vision of Ethical, Carbon-Negative Nickel and Cobalt

Anne Oxley, Technical Director, Brazilian Nickel PLC

Brazilian Nickel PLC has the vision to produce ethical, carbon-negative nickel and cobalt for the world. Its Flagship Piauí Project is a nickel heap leach that is a low-cost and inherently low-carbon-footprint process. BRN is currently looking at innovative ways to reduce its CO2 emissions even further. In this presentation, we will outline the project progress to date and the status of the ongoing carbon reduction strategies.

Manganese: The Forgotten Battery Metal

Sam Jaffe, Vice President, Battery Solutions, ESource

Lithium, cobalt, and nickel get the headlines, but there's another material that's just as crucial to the future of the battery industry: Manganese. Manganese is used in most batteries and consumption is set to increase dramatically with the coming introduction of high-manganese cathode materials. This talk will focus on the changing trends in the use of manganese and ESource's forecasts of manganese consumption by the battery industry.

Mark Thompson, Managing Director, Talga Group

A sustainable lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle industry relies on a both secure and green supply of critical raw materials. In this session, we will outline how Talga’s controlled Swedish natural graphite supply feeds its European-first Electric Vehicle Anode plant, demonstrating a localised model of anode production that can drive sustainability while retaining integrity over the entire supply chain.

How Freyr Will Build a Better Battery Material Value Chain in Norway

Sachiya Inagaki, Vice President, Battery Material Supply Business, FREYE Battery Norway AS

In order to reduce CO2 emissions, not only cell production but also the production of materials with high CO2 emissions must be done with renewable energy. Scandinavian countries such as Norway have widespread use of renewable energy and are suitable areas for reducing CO2 emissions in the production process. In this seminar, we will introduce the strategy of Freyr, a Norwegian cell production company, to build a battery material value chain.

14:40

Global Raw Material Traceability as Potential Tool for Proof of Responsibility and Sustainability of the Batteries

Jani Kiuru, CTO, Finnish Minerals Group

As battery manufacturing is being established in Europe – the supply of those giga factories is in a key position to set standards for responsibility and sustainability. It is no longer enough just to provide the origin of the supplied materials. Increased awareness will demand more detailed indicators from CO2 footprint to social acceptance and environmental performance throughout the supply chain. None of these exist. Indicators and their traceability would provide the possibility for premium pricing for those exceeding the minimum requirements. At least it could provide end to the possibility to gain unfair competitive advantage by importing materials produced with lower standards.
